Blanket Forts and Tequila

INT. UNIVERSITY BEDROOM. DAY.

A lonely bedroom. Personal objects are sparse in the room and the walls are bare. A neat pile of sheets lie on a bare mattress.

The window is open and a breeze gently disturbs the curtains. It is the only movement in the room. The room is a blank canvas, aching to be painted.

INT. TOILET. DAY.

ELOISE (18) slim, fashionable but awkward, washes her hands while looking at herself in the mirror. She takes a shaky breath and turns off the tap. The sudden silence is oppressive.

She dries her hands and leaves the room.

INT. CORRIDOR. DAY.

Eloise walks quickly down a long corridor. She pauses by an open door and peers in.

Inside is a room identical to her own but in chaos. It is filled with half-unpacked suitcases, boxes and bin liners.

Behind her the flat door opens and she quickly runs down the rest of the corridor and into her own room.

INT. UNIVERSITY BEDROOM. DAY.

She closes the door carefully and looks at the room. It is monstrously lonely.

Eloise rubs her feet into the carpet.

She walks to the bed and picks up a sheet, running her fingers gently across it.

INT. CHILDHOOD HOME – PARENT’S BEDROOM. DAY.

Eloise (7) looks up at her mother. She is thin and very pale but she is beautiful. She has vivid wavy red hair which falls to her shoulders.

Eloise hands her a neatly folded sheet and her mother smiles.

The room is awash with golden light that spills in through the open windows.

INT. UNIVERSITY BEDROOM. DAY.

Eloise hears movement in the corridor and turns to the closed door, hugging the sheet to her chest.

Laughter fills the corridor as many people are heard entering the flat. Eventually they disappear as a door closes.

Eloise looks down at the sheet and shakes it out. She throws her arms up and the sheet balloons over the camera.

INT. CHILDHOOD HOME – PARENT’S BEDROOM. DAY.

The sheet drifts down gently over the bed.

Eloise stands across the bed from her mother and they pick up the sheet and pull it taut.

Eloise giggles as she struggles to compete with her mother’s strength. Her mother relaxes slightly and Eloise falls backwards laughing.

INT. UNIVERSITY BEDROOM. DAY.

Eloise kneels by her bed. She tucks the sheet over the thin mattress and folds it into a successful hospital corner.

She walks over to the other side of the bed and kneels down. She pulls the sheet taut but pulls too hard and the sheet comes off the bed completely.

She sighs, picks up the sheet and starts again.

INT. CHILDHOOD HOME – PARENTS’ BEDROOM. DAY.

Eloise (7) sits in the corner of the room with her chin on her knees. The room is once again awash with golden light.

Her mother naps on the bed, reading glasses on the end of her nose and a book slipping out of her hands.

She coughs and wakes suddenly, dropping the book on the floor. She struggles to sit up and reach for a glass of water next to her. She sips at it and her coughing subsides.

She notices Eloise and is still. Eventually she smiles and Eloise smiles back.

INT. CHILDHOOD HOME – LIVING ROOM. DAY.

Eloise (7) and her mother pull a sheet taut and drape it over an impressively made fortress constructed out of sheets, blankets, pillows and a large duvet. The furniture has been pushed around in order to make room for the structure.

They drape the sheet over a coffee table which becomes the door.

Eloise immediately dives through it and after a moment her mother carefully gets on her hands and knees and follows her.

int. childhood home – duvet fortress. day.

They crawl inside. It is bathed in a magical golden light. Eloise is ecstatic and explores her new home.

She turns to her mother excitedly.

INT. ELOISE’S IMAGINATION – DUVET FORTRESS. DAY.

Her mother is radiant. Her red hair is vivid in the unusual light and her skin is no longer pale. She wears a silver medieval gown and has flowers in her hair.

The fortress is triple the size in Eloise’s imagination and furnished by lavish pillows covering the entire floor. Eloise wears a shiny suit of armour.

They hear movement outside and turn towards the door.

Thunderous footsteps that could only belong to an ogre or giant echo around the fortress as they come closer. The walls tremble with fear and her mother hides behind Eloise who grips a plastic sword tightly.

The door moves and a figure enters.

INT. CHILDHOOD HOME – DUVET FORTRESS. DAY.

It is Eloise’s father.

Her mother gives a breathless laugh and her father shakes his head. He leaves the fortress.

It is quiet for some time then there is a sound of rustling. Her father returns with a paper bag, plates and cutlery.

He crawls into the fortress, crumpling his suit and tie.

He hands Eloise’s mother the bag and she laughs again as she takes out the hot fish and chips.

Eloise’s father puts Eloise on his lap as she munches her dinner happily.

INT. UNIVERSITY BEDROOM. DAY.

Eloise stares at her freshly made bed. It has not made the room any more welcoming.

She walks to the window and looks out. Below, there are many cars with students unpacking their belongings and carrying them into the building.

A girl and her parents struggle to pull a large suitcase out of the back of their car. It is too heavy and they drop it onto the floor. They laugh and the father shakes his head.

Eloise closes her eyes and turns away from the window quickly.

INT. CHILDHOOD HOME – PARENT’S BEDROOM. DAY.

Eloise (7) pauses by the open door. She is too scared to go in so she peaks her head into the room.

Her father is alone in the room. His back is turned to the door.

He pulls the sheets off the bed and throws them aggressively into a black bin liner on the floor which is already full with duvet covers and pillow slips.

He turns to the door and jumps when he sees Eloise. His eyes are red.

He smiles sadly and picks up the bin liner. He walks out of the room, past Eloise.

She takes one last look at the bare bed and follows him.

INT. UNIVERSITY BEDROOM. DAY.

Eloise stares at her silent room for some time. Then she grabs her duvet and aggressively unmakes her bed.

INT. UNIVERSITY BEDROOM. DAY.

Eloise struggles to push her bed across her room. She throws her uncovered duvet across it and her desk.

INT. UNIVERSITY BEDROOM. DAY.

Violently she opens all the draws in her wardrobe and pulls out sheets, towels, and coats.

INT. UNIVERSITY BEDROOM- INSIDE DUVET FORTRESS. DAY.

She crawls under her desk pushing pillows in front of her.

INT. UNIVERSITY BEDROOM. DAY.

She crawls out of the fortress and goes to grab another pillow when there is a knock on the door. Eloise freezes. She is trapped behind the fortress that encompasses the whole room. There is another knock.

ELOISE

Um… hello? You can come in.

The door opens to reveal MICHAEL (19), tall, lanky and just as awkward as Eloise. He looks at the room in shock.

MICHAEL

Um… hi.

ELOISE

 (quietly) Hi.

MICHAEL

I’m Michael.

ELOISE

Eloise.

There is a short, awkward silence.

MICHAEL

Um… I’ve just moved in. It’s the, um, the room at the end of the hall.

ELOISE

Oh. I got here this morning.

A beat. She glances down at the fortress quickly.

ELOISE (cont’d)

There wasn’t much to do.

MICHAEL

Oh. There’s a girl who’s moving her stuff in next door to me. She seems nice.

ELOISE

That’s good.

MICHAEL

Yeah. And there’s a girl opposite you.

ELOISE

I haven’t spoken to her.

MICHAEL

Me neither. She has friends already.

ELOISE

Yeah…

There is another pause. Eloise hugs her chest.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)

So, erm… Do you wanna hang out? It’s kinda quiet now that my parents have left.

ELOISE

(surprised) Sure, OK.

MICHAEL

Erm, OK. OK, hold on.

He runs out of the room but quickly jumps back to grab the door as it moves to slam. He smiles awkwardly and closes it.

Eloise is mortified.

She tries to calm down her hair and looks at the fortress in panic. She picks up a towel from one of the walls but doesn’t know what to do with it. She puts it back.

There is another knock on the door and Michael’s head appears once more. He enters the room.

MICHAEL

I spoke to Jenna. She’s that girl moving in next to me. She said she’d join us if you want.

Eloise nods.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)

Cool.

He looks at the fortress before crawling under the desk and into it.

Eloise closes her eyes. She waits for him to come out her end but he doesn’t.

MICHAEL (cont’d)

You coming?

Eloise pokes her head inside the fortress to see Michael getting himself comfortable. He holds a bottle in his hand.

He smiles at her and she climbs in.

ELOISE

Erm… we can go to your room if you want.

MICHAEL

Are you kidding? It’s been years since I’ve been in one of these! I hope you like tequila. My dad got it. I think it was meant to buy me friends. My dad’s like that.

Eloise smiles.

INT. UNIVERSITY CORRIDOR. DAY.

A girl walks confidently down the corridor carrying three glasses. She knocks on Eloise’s door and lets herself in.

The door closes behind her and the corridor is empty once more, but this time it is filled with occasional laughter.
